Launching in 2012 and with a long wine tradition in their families, Ana Gadín and Javier Mendoza chose the name to pay homage to the core part of their business – the vines.  Linking back to Roman times, the ‘Atrium’ was the centre of a house, in the same way that the ‘Vitis’ (vine) is central to the winery.

Surrounded by mountains, the six hectares of vineyards lie in the UNESCO World Geopark, Montañas do Caurel.  They have 12 plots, dedicated mainly to indigenous Galician grape varieties, which they vinify separately.  However, right from the start, they wanted to do things a little differently from other wineries.  So, recognising the potential for making unique white wines, they took inspiration from Javier’s grandfather and began experimenting with fermenting and ageing wine in oak, particularly barrel-fermented Albariño, as well as making contemporary red wine expressions.

Ana and Javier have also discovered abandoned vines, hidden deep within the local overgrown forest.  They are currently clearing part of this area by hand, to recover these old vines and to identify the grape varieties.
