With previous experience working for other wineries, María Burgoa Cobreros and her sister founded family winery Bodega Lar de Maia in 2015.  She came up with the name, as ‘Maia’ is Latin for May, which is when they bottled their first wine and ‘Lar’ is related to the local terroir.  They wanted a melodic-sounding name that was easy to pronounce, with numbers for each of their wines to give the labels eye-catching appeal.  So, 5°, 7° and 8° represent the months when the wines were created and each bottle neck contains a small technical description.

At Bodega Lar de Maia, they make Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León from sustainable vineyards of 80 to more than 100 years’ old.  They farm organically on poor soils with low yields, using natural fertilisers, but are not yet certified.  Between the plots, different types of cereals are also grown.

The winery’s philosophy is to produce natural wines from old vines, without using additives and they base their production on the Vino de Pago model.
